In September 2020, with the approval of the State Council, Ningbo became one of the three expansion areas of China (Zhejiang) Pilot Free Trade Zone.

Ningbo Front Bay New Area is located in the north of Ningbo and the south bank of Hangzhou Bay, which is one of the six new zones in the development layout of Zhejiang Great Bay Area, and also a landmark strategic platform for the high-quality integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta. The management area of the New Zone covers the main functional areas such as Hangzhou Bay New Zone, Sino-Italy (Ningbo) Ecological Park, Cixi Hi-tech Economic Development Zone and Hangzhou Bay Innovative and Economic Zone, with a total area of about 604 sq.km. and a population of about 550,000 in 2020. Currently, the total current GDP of the New Zone is about RMB 110.018 billion, the total industrial output value above designated volume is RMB 238.930 billion and the total financial revenue is RMB 21.404 billion, being the largest development zone in Zhejiang Province. By 2025, the New Zone aims to have a population of 800,000 and a per capita GDP of RMB 220,000; by 2035, a population of 1,250,000 and a per capita GDP of RMB 300,000, becoming the core engine of Ningbo's industrial upgrading, the northern sub-center of Ningbo metropolitan area, and an important part of the world-class urban agglomeration of the Yangtze River Delta.

Yong River Sci-tech Innovation Corridor is located in the center of Ningbo, being composed of the core areas of Jiangbei District, Zhenhai District, Beilun District, Yinzhou District, Ningbo National High-tech Zone and Dongqian Lake. The Innovation Corridor with industrial linkage, spatial connection, functional integration and open sharing will be created in compliance with the Space Planning of Yong River Sci-tech Innovation Corridor, relying on Yong River - Yao River System and the transportation corridor; various innovation carriers will be integrated and two innovation circles (two sections) in the north and south along both sides of Yong River and Dongqian Lake area will be built, aiming to build a 136 sq.km. "one-corridor two-sections" overall space layout.

Many famous national universities and colleges will be settled within the corridor, including Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology & Engineering, CAS, Ningbo University, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences Ningbo Materials Engineering Institute and Shanghai Jiaotong University Artificial Intelligence Institute, with a total of more than 30 universities and research institutions. The corridor will have more than 70% of the key talents selected by the state and provincial level, about one-third of academician workstations and postdoctoral workstations, more than half of international enterprise technology centers, one-third of national high-tech enterprises and provincial enterprise research institutes in the country, which will be the area of the most intensive science and innovation resources in southeast Zhejiang, and also the area with the most concentrated innovation elements and the best innovation foundation and condition in Ningbo.

Ningbo Airport Economic Demonstration Zone is located in the central and southern part of Haishu District of Ningbo, close to Fenghua River. While being in the central urban area,the planning area of the zone extends to Hengyin Line in the west, Yincheng Avenue in the south, Fenghua River in the East and Lianfeng Road in the north, with a planning area of 82,5 sq.km., being composed of Wangchun Industrial Park, Shiqi Sub-district and Gulin Town of Haishu District, which is The 11th National Airport Economic Demonstration Zone approved by the National Development and Reform Commission.

As one of the four major municipal zones established by Ningbo Municipal Party Committee and Government, Ningbo Southern Bay New Area is a big industrial platform for Ningbo and even Zhejiang Province, a new highland for development, and a major undertaking site for the construction of Ningbo's "2-4-6" trillion level industrial cluster.
